Pretzel Kids Yoga April Teacher Feature: Meet Emily!

kids yoga teacher online

Meet Emily Hotchkiss, our April featured teacher and our first  teacher spotlight for the spring 2018!

Emily became a certified Pretzel Kids yoga teacher in January. A registered yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance, this Seattle-based mom particularly enjoys practicing yoga with her nine year old daughter, who is a competitive figure skater.

“Yoga helps her with flexibility and focus, and to remain calm in challenging situations,” says Emily.

Emily’s kids yoga classes are filled with fun games, yoga postures, breathing, and opportunities to communicate and share kindness. When not practicing or teaching yoga, she spends time with her family and shuttles her daughter to ice skating lessons!

This multi-talented Pretzel Kids teacher is also a real estate broker with a degree in management and multimedia design. At any given time, you may find Emily dabbling with Photoshop or showing houses to her clients. She recently took the time to talk to Pretzel Kids. Here’s what she had to say:

Pretzel Kids: How long have you been teaching and practicing yoga?

Emily: I’ve been practicing yoga since 1999. I started with Bikram and then progressed to hot power, sculpt and yin. I’ve been teaching since March of 2017!

Pretzel Kids: Tell me one fun fact about you. It can be anything!

Emily: Before I had my daughter, I used to rock climb outdoors and my favorite rock climbing spot is Smith Rock in Oregon.  Pretzel Kids: What do you like to do in your spare time?

Emily: I volunteer at my daughter’s school as an art docent.

Pretzel Kids: What drew you to the Pretzel Kids online teacher training course?

Emily: I liked that the founders are teachers and therefore they know how to structure a class. They’re also knowledgeable about kids’ behaviors.

Pretzel Kids: What is your favorite thing (or two) about the Pretzel Kids certification course?

Emily: I liked that the structure provided a timeline to teach successful classes. The course as a whole gives you all the necessary tools to teach a kid’s yoga class.

Pretzel Kids: Do you feel prepared to teach children’s yoga and did the Pretzel Kids online course expand your knowledge?

Emily: Yes! I am already teaching kids yoga classes.

Pretzel Kids: Where do you plan to teach future Pretzel Kids yoga classes?

Emily: In the Seattle area, where I live and at the studios where I currently teach adult yoga classes.  Pretzel Kids: How do you hope to make a positive impact with the Pretzel Kids curriculum?

Emily: I’d like to teach kids how to use their breath to stay calm in challenging situations. I’d also like to teach them about positive body image and how to be kind – all while having fun!

Pretzel Kids: You had the opportunity to create a couple of Pretzel Kids lesson plans as part of your certification. What was this creative process like? If you have taught these lessons using the tools we provide, did this make teaching easier? What was the reception from the kids?

Emily: The creative process was fun! It snowed the day I created my winter theme, so I thought about what kids like to do in the snow and then created poses and a breathing exercise incorporating cotton balls (to represent snowballs). I taught this winter day class and the kids loved it! They were engaged the entire time and the structure worked extremely well since I didn’t say on one portion of the class for too long. They especially loved the Pretzel Kids games!

Pretzel Kids: How did you hear about Pretzel Kids?

Emily: I was searching online for a kids yoga teacher training course.

Pretzel Kids: Do you recommend the training course to friends, moms, childcare providers and yoga teachers? If so, why?

Emily: Yes! The course is easy to follow online and it provides more than enough information to teach a kids yoga class as soon as you complete the course!

Pretzel Kids: Now for the speed round! What’s your favorite Pretzel Kids pose?

Emily: Surfer pose! Pretzel Kids: What’s your favorite Pretzel Kids game?

Emily: Magic Yogi!  Pretzel Kids: What’s your favorite Pretzel Kids theme?

Emily: A day at the zoo! Pretzel Kids: What’s your favorite food?

Emily: Cheese! I can’t resist cheese!

Thank you Emily and we wish you continued success! Do you want to be featured in an upcoming Pretzel Kids newsletter or blog post? Let us know by emailing us atinfo@pretzelkids.com!
