Pretzel Kids Yoga Teacher Feature: Meet Alyse!

Meet Alyse Gaboriault, our May 2017 featured teacher! Alyse recently completed the Pretzel Kids yoga teacher training course and is about to embark on her kids yoga teaching journey.

We recently had the opportunity to get to know Alyse and asked her about what she liked best about the Pretzel Kids yoga program. We’re sure you’ll enjoy learning about her too.

Pretzel Kids: Can you tell us a bit about you?

Alyse: I am currently a stay-at-home mom to a beautiful 18 month old baby boy named Oliver. I graduated from Salve Regina University in Rhode Island with Bachelor of Science in Elementary Special Education and then spent 11 years as an elementary special education. Leading up to the birth of my son, I also worked as an activity director & curriculum coordinator for  “Looking Upwards”, an agency that supports adults with special needs in the areas of job placement, life skills, academics, social skills, & positive relationships.

I have been practicing yoga on and off for about 5 years and my favorite classes are heated  vinyasa.

Pretzel Kids: Tell me one fun fact about you.

Alyse: I love horses and have been riding since I was 5 years old. Two summers ago I had an  awesome summer job working for an equestrian summer camp for children with special needs called “Ponies as Partners”.

Pretzel Kids: What do you like to do in your spare time?

Alyse: I take yoga classes whenever I can!  I also love to sing and do musical theater. (Pretzel Kids fun fact note: We don’t think Alyse knew that our founder’s son starred as “Billy Elliot” in the National Broadway tour, “Billy Elliot the Musical”!)

Pretzel Kids: What drew you to the Pretzel Kids yoga online course?

Alyse: I wanted to do something that would effect positive change in both my life and the lives of children. I especially wanted to continue pursue my passion to work with children with special needs and was drawn to this aspect of the course. I also needed to get yoga back in my life. I look forward to building a unique practice around this concept.

Another thing that drew me to Pretzel Kids: As a stay-at-home mom, traveling to a physical class was impossible. The online route was the way to go!

Pretzel Kids: What is your favorite thing (or two) about the Pretzel Kids yoga method?

Alyse: I loved learning about the yoga games, and I love the theme concept. I can’t wait to create  fun lesson plans for my kids. I already have so many ideas!

Pretzel Kids: After taking the Pretzel Kids yoga certification course, do you feel prepared to teach children’s yoga?

Alyse: Absolutely! The course was very informative. Going through each aspect of a typical Pretzel Kids lesson plan by actually participating in and practicing each segment made everything clear and comfortable. The teachers manual is also an amazing resource. It is easy to use and full of valuable information.

Pretzel Kids: Where do you live and where would you like to teach kids yoga in your community?

Alyse: I live in Portsmouth, Rhode Island and I plan to teach in Portsmouth and the surrounding towns (Middletown, Newport). I hope to begin by teaching special needs yoga at “Looking Upwards,” in addition to classes  at a local momma and baby store called “Yummy Cloud” in Swansea, Massachusetts..

Pretzel Kids: How do you hope to make a positive impact with the Pretzel Kids yoga curriculum?

Alyse: I believe that the practice of yoga promotes a happy, peaceful, and positive life. It gives us strategies for positively dealing with frustration, stress, worry and anxiety. As adults, we often forget that children also deal with these emotions in their daily lives, but they often lack the ability to deal with these emotions in a healthy way. I hope to bring positive vibes and peace to the daily lives of every child I teach.

Pretzel Kids: How did you hear about us? Would you recommend the course to friends, moms, childcare providers and yoga teachers?

Alyse: I found Pretzel Kids online while searching for courses to teach yoga to children. I would without-a-doubt recommend this course to friends, parents, child care providers, yoga teachers, & anyone who wants to teach yoga to children! It was easy to complete this course on my own schedule, and once I completed it, I felt like I had a well-rounded understanding of how to teach yoga to all children.

Pretzel Kids: What’s your favorite Pretzel Kids pose?

Alyse: My favorite Pretzel Kids pose would have to be zombie pose because Halloween is my favorite holiday and I love horror movies.

Pretzel Kids: What’s your favorite Pretzel Kids game?

Alyse: My favorite Pretzel Kids game is Magic Yogi because it is a familiar concept to most kids and it can easily be adapted to fit any theme.

Pretzel Kids: Just for kicks, what’s your favorite food?

Alyse: My favorite food is pizza with pineapples and black olives. Yumm!
