Pretzel Kids Yoga Teacher Feature: Meet Melissa Smith!

Meet Melissa Smith, our November 2019 featured Pretzel Kids yoga teacher!

Melissa is a 28-year veteran public school teacher who has taught many K-8 subjects, including English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), STEM, gifted, and all other content areas.

She is currently teaching media arts in middle school. Melissa is particularly excited as she just got certified in visual arts, a new subject in her Georgia county school system.

Melissa’s children are grown, and she lives in the Atlanta suburbs with her two cats and a husky dog, who acts like a toddler at home. She has been practicing yoga for a while, and teaching yoga for about five years.

Melissa is our first Pretzel Kids yoga teacher in Atlanta and we’re excited to have her on board! We recently learned about her yoga journey and desire to become a kids yoga teacher.

Here’s what she had to say:

Pretzel Kids: Tell me one or two fun facts about you.

Melissa: I speak Spanish and am a Level One Reiki Practitioner!

Pretzel Kids: What do you like to do in your spare time?

Melissa: I like to practice yoga, go thrift shopping or antiquing, travel, do anything related to beaches or lakes, and take nature walks.

Pretzel Kids: What drew you to the Pretzel Kids online yoga teacher training course?

Melissa: I liked the creative and well organized format of Pretzel Kids yoga. I also appreciated the ability to be able to fit it into my busy schedule because I could do it at home.

Pretzel Kids: What is your favorite thing (or two) about the course?

Melissa: The themed lessons are fun and creative!

Pretzel Kids: How does Pretzel Kids help you feel more prepared to teach children’s yoga classes?

Melissa: I have been doing summer camps for a while, but I enjoy hearing about new and different ideas to keep classes current and fresh. I also love the community that Pretzel Kids is building!

Pretzel Kids: Where would you like to teach Pretzel Kids yoga in your community? Where are you from originally and how did that inform your decision to teach kids yoga?

Melissa: I look forward to teaching Pretzel Kids in the Atlanta area. Atlanta is a busy market and everyone needs an opportunity to wind down…even kids.

I love yoga and it’s helped me so much; I see so much potential for kids and yoga. In fact, many of my summer camp kids have come back for the last four years. They remember everything we’ve done and their parents often share pictures of them doing yoga on vacation or at home.

Pretzel Kids: How do you hope to make a positive impact with the Pretzel Kids Method?

Melissa: I want kids to be able to calm themselves and to be positive…to be able to self-regulate a bit better. I want them to have tools to make healthy choices.

Pretzel Kids: What is the process like when creating Pretzel Kids lesson plans? Do these lesson plans make teaching easier? Do the kids like your Pretzel Kids yoga classes

Melissa: The younger kids in particular love them! We are starting yoga in the park and I look forward to many fun yoga lessons. I modify the lesson plans somewhat for the older tween group, and they enjoy them, too.

Pretzel Kids: How did you hear about Pretzel Kids yoga?

Melissa: I found it on the Internet after researching kid’s yoga programs. As a teacher, I can verify that the lessons flow well and are easy to follow. The kids enjoy them and so do I.

Pretzel Kids: What’s your favorite Pretzel Kids yoga pose?

Melissa: I am a cat lover and used to do karate, so somehow TIGER resonates with me. It’s fun!

Pretzel Kids: What’s your favorite Pretzel Kids yoga game?

Melissa: I like the Sun Salute wave…the tweens enjoy this and they not only get moving and breathing, but have to focus to make it work right.

Pretzel Kids: What’s your favorite Pretzel Kids yoga theme?

Melissa: I really love the ocean theme for summer classes.

Pretzel Kids: What’s your favorite food (just for fun!)

Melissa: My favorite foods are anything Mexican and Thai. I like bold flavors!

Thank you Melissa and we wish you continued success!
